Introduction
I had been sleeping off the worst hangover I'd had for at least a day when the call came through. I scrabbled about, still half asleep, and finally managed to grab the receiver. Which I promptly used to clonk myself one in the face (I think such things are traditional).
The voice on the other end of the phone was low and excited: "We got a dead one, boss. Rossetter Street. Be there or be a funny shaped thing."
There was a click! as the caller hung up.
A murder, eh? Just my line of business.
Actual that's a lie. You do play the part of a detective but you won't find any nuns, monkeys or Nazi war criminals in this game. Or nuclear bombs for that matter. But you can't win 'em all.
The game is not designed to be easy but it is designed to be logical. You won't need to guess the verb or try to get into the writer's head (a difficult thing to do anyway as I wear a very hard hat most of the time) in trying to figure out just what I was thinking at the time I wrote it. It is also (hopefully at any rate) completely free of bugs. Of course, in a game this large and complex no amount of play-testing is going to guarantee that all the bugs are removed, but the game is definitely finishable and you shouldn't run into any weird error messages.
To progress through the game, you should make a point of questioning people, generally in the format [ask "such-and-such" about "such-and-such"]. As to whether you get a response or not (and a response that's any good to you) is entirely in the hands of the Gods.
At points in the game you'll need to drive your car (assuming you get that far and manage to find where you hid the keys) and to do this simply type "drive to" followed by the name of the location you want to visit. Sometimes the name of the street will do, sometimes you can also type the name of the building.
Not every location in the game needs to be visited. Some are just red herrings. There are two that if you reach, you've probably done something wrong at some point because in all fairness you should never have to visit those locations.
The same with the locations applies to items in the game: you don't need to pick up everything you see. Some you do need, others you don't and are just there to confuse and baffle you. Figuring out which ones you need is part of the game.
You can ask for help by typing "help" or "hint" at certain points in the game. As to whether you get any help is another matter entirely. If there's no help to be given at the time, a little birdie will tell you as much.
In this adventure you play the part of a detective assigned to solve a brutal murder involving a nun, a monkey and several Nazi war criminals. Oh, and there's a nuclear bomb thrown in for good measure...
