The Demon Hunter by David Parish [thatguy]

The Demon Hunter
a "Finish The Game Comp" entry written by david parish
Finally, after years of searching and following the ancient texts, you have made your way to this place in the western Iraqi desert. Here among the sand filled caves you have found the object of you quest ~ The Hidden Church of Magog.

The Hidden Church has long been rumored to exist as a place where the last of the half-breed Nephilim came to hide from the wrath of God.

You have been searching for this place for over twenty years and now, at long last, your hunt for the demon has ended.

Grabbing your flashlight from your pack, you begin to study an odd rock formation when suddenly the sand gives way beneath your feet and you find yourself sucked down into a cavernous room. As you regain your bearings, you search the ceiling for the hole you fell through only to find that there is not one there...

Ruined Statue
Above you towers a broken statue, ravaged by the passage of time. A crown of stone rests upon its brow, a glittering jewel its centrepiece. About you lurk malevolent shadows, seeming to move with a life of their own, though these are glimpses seen from the corner of your eye that vanish the moment you look closely at them.

Passages in the ruined walls of this place lie to the north and west.

> push statue
Straining your muscles to their limit, you manage to maneuver the statue down the grooves cut into the floor, doing so apparently pulls a hidden rope, opening a small hole in the ceiling letting a ray of sunshine in.

The ray of light hits the jewel in its center and the giant gem bursts into glittering brilliance banishing all darkness from the room! All the misty shadows fade from view revealing a small golden cross resting on a rock pedestal

> get cross
You take the Cross of Christ from the small pedestal.

Cage
The centre of this circular chamber is a cage, sunken into the floor, in which the remains of some beast lie decomposing. Claw marks on the bars of the cage indicate the beast fought ferociously to escape its imprisonment, yet failed. And died.

To the west there is a large chamber from which a humming sound emanates; to the east you can make out a statue.

During the course of your inspection, you find a small bowl next to the cage. The bowl seems to have held drinking water for whatever was in here.

> get bowl
You take the small bowl.

Humming Chamber
Once this was doubtless some kind of meeting hall. Rows of seats spiral outwards from a central podium where a speaker once stood to deliver speeches to a waiting audience. Many of the seats are smashed and little but splinters remain. Burn marks scar the floor and walls; in one place there is what appears to be a large quantity of books and scrolls which someone has attempted to burn but abandoned partway through.

A faint humming sound can be heard, emanating from somewhere in the chamber.

A passage extends northwest and another to the east. Sifting through the rubble, all you can find is one fragile scrap of parchment.

> move pile
You manage to clear away part of the debris and in doing so reveal a small ladder leading down in to darkness.

> d
You move down.
The Armory
This room appears to have once housed a massive quantity of gladiatorial arms; judging by the frescos and murals painted on the walls. It seems that most of the weapons and such have turned to rust and fused together in one large lump.

That strange humming sound is quite a bit louder here and seems to be coming from the south.

A small passage leads to the south and ladder rungs are hewn into one wall leading up. In the corner your eyes latch on to a newly cleaned and very well taken care of spear.

> get spear
You take the spear feeling its cool weight in your hands.

The Chapel
This Chapel is virtually empty save for a monk's desk, a simple wooden chair, and a small bed. Upon entering this room, the first thing you notice is the old man sitting in a chair hunched over his desk chanting in a monotone voice. As you move closer, he raises his head and the humming sound stops.

He opens his eyes and stares into your face for a moment or two before opening his mouth to speak, "So you HAVE come at last?" His voice sounds as though it hasn't been used for eons, all gravely and cracking. "I knew IT would be you…YOU have come to set me FREE! For so long have I prayed FOR the one who can end my lengthy VIGIL. And now that you are here, I CAN finally die in peace…."

His last few words seem to float in the air as his body vanishes into the mist and vapors of eternity.

> get book
You take the monk's prayer book.

Blocked Passage
The ceiling has collapsed, blocking further access along this passage. On one wall is an opening which overlooks the outside world, although the drop looks to be formidable and you doubt you could survive it.

The passage leads back to the southeast.

> x ceiling
The rock ceiling caved in here some time ago, apparently due to water erosion caused by the small stream trickling down from a small crack in the wall. The water is collecting in a small pool before running off to the abyss below.

> fill bowl
You kneel down and carefully fill the small bowl with water from the pool at you feet.

> put left hand over bowl
Flexing your fingers, you stretch your left hand out over the surface of the bowl.

> bless water
As you recite the blessing, you can feel the water getting warmer; you look and the water's surface has begun to sparkle and shimmer; the sweet fragrance of olive oil comes wafting up from the bowl. As you conclude the blessing you discover that the water had been transformed into Holy Anointing Water!

> anoint spear
You take the spear in one hand, and with the other you pour the Anointing Water on the tip and cover the entire length of the shaft until the whole spear is glistening.

As you watch, the glistening intensifies; growing and shifting, bathing the spear in soft white light. As the light fades, you notice that the once simple wooden shaft is now solid gold; and the flattened metal tip is now the purest silver! Surely this is the Holy Spear spoken of in the ancient texts!

Ancient Gallery
The walls about you are ancient and crumbling, yet modern looking portraits hang from them all the same. The faces depicted twist and writhe in torment. Is it your imagination or can you also hear their cries? Against one wall lies a large crystal, as tall as a man and wide as a chariot, in which is imprisoned the form of… something.

A passage lies away to the south and another to the northeast, at the end of which a light shines faintly.

> put cross on floor
You place the Golden Cross of Christ on the floor next to the crystal. As you stand, you notice the mist whirling and convulsing around the demon inside that has begun to shudder and fidget, - as if it is being hurt somehow.

> pray prayer of freedom
You kneel on the floor and pray the Monks prayer of Freedom. As you pray, you feel waves of heat flowing off of the crystal. You can hear the demon inside writhing and shouting in pain. You can hear creaking and cracking as the centuries old prison begins to buckle and splinter as God removes the barrier between the world of demons and men.As the last of the crystal shards fall to the floor, you are left standing face to face with a bloated, grotesque façade of what once was a Beautiful Nephilim.

The rotting half-breed bellows at you, "Where is Magog, you putrid worm? Where is that son of a harlot? I will have my revenge against him and his sons! Where is he! I am Hajar mightiest of the Accursed Six and I have awakened at last and will have my revenge!"

His gaze finding the ring on your finger, Hajar roars out, "YOU! You are wearing the ring of the Brotherhood of the Hidden Church! A sniveling gnat such as you is from the line of Magog? I will tear your puny body into shreds and shall gorge myself on your roasted flesh!"

As he notices the spear in your hand, Hajar sneers, "What do you have there you pathetic pile of dung? A little spear? Do you really thick a small stubby spear can challenge me! I am Hajar brother to Baal; first-servant to the great Lucifer himself! I will crush you where you stand!"

With that, Hajar draws a huge scimitar from his belt and nearly takes your head off with one swing.

> kill hajar
Stabbing forward, your spear meets Hajar's scimitar on a downward chop effectively blocking the blow; the force of the collision makes your ears ring.

> kill hajar
Hajar stabs towards your midsection taking a good bit of cloth and flesh away on the tip of his sword, and comes back around for another attack.

Swinging with every once of strength you possess, you blunt Hajar's attack, and spin behind him. You are able hit the demon-spawn in the back of his head with the blunt end of your spear before he swings around again.

> kill hajar
Lashing out with all your might, you slice a deep gash in Hajar's side, causing him to reel in pain.

Hajar spins on his good leg and catches you in the armpit causing you to stumble back.

You spin around whipping the spear in front of you, creating a small space between you and the demon-spawn. Stopping suddenly and placing the butt of the spear's shaft in the palm of your hand, you heave it forward with every once of strength you possess. Hajar screams in torment as the Holy Spear rips into his body. Heaving and gasping his sulfurous breath, he gazes down at the shaft that protrudes out of the middle of his chest. Then suddenly, and with out warning, Hajar is instantaneously consumed in a bright red ball of flame that knocks you onto your back.

As you regain your footing, all that is left of Hajar, the Holy Spear, and the Crystal Prison, is a thin yellowish haze that surrounds you and covers you. As it does, you can feel the effects of battle leaving your body; as you move out of the haze, you realize that you have been fully healed!
