The Lost Tomb by Thomas Mulkerrins

It has taken years, but you've finally found it, the lost tomb of Erick. They all called you mad, a fool, a cheat. None had believed in the ancient legends except you, and now, with funding from Lord Rupert Mongoose, you have finally found it.

The sands of the desert bake under the scorching sun and there is an excitement around the camp. The entrance was discovered and removed the previous day, and today you shall enter it alone, as none of the locals dare incur the wrath of Erick, for it is written, anyone who disturbs his sleep, shall pay with their lives.

Just as you prepare to leave however, an unexpected visitor arrives, Rupert Mongoose.

"Why hello dear boy! Long time no see!" He says as he frantically shakes your hand. "I heard last night you found the tomb, excellent work by the way!, so I thought it might be quite nice if I tagged along, you know, see first hand where all my money has been going, what! Now I know we'll probably be just rooting around a lot of dusty old things, but it gets me out of the house, as it where. So here I am, fully equipped with my rucksack and pith helmet! When do we leave?"

Workers go about their business amongst the big white tents of the camp. Your tent is pitched nearby, and to the north, is the trail to the tomb. Rupert is here.

> in
You move in.
Your temporary abode is simple, but functional, consisting solely of your bunk and a nightstand. Also here is your rucksack.

> x nightstand
A cheap and simple piece of furniture. Functional, rather than formal. The lamp is on your nightstand.

> get lamp
You take the lamp from your nightstand.

> get rucksack
You pick up your rucksack.

> open rucksack
You open your rucksack. Inside your rucksack is a box of matches, a pencil, a notebook, a water bottle, a rope and a stick of dynamite.

> out
You move out.

> x water bottle
A leather water bottle, large enough for two days ration. A cork is inside the water bottle.

> get cork
You take a cork from the water bottle.

> empty water bottle
You pour the water onto the ground.

> fill water bottle with sand
The water bottle is now filled with sand, and feels heavier for being so.

> north
The walk is long and dusty, under the hot sun. It is made even worse by Rupert's insistence to sing songs from his youth.
You are more then glad when you finally reach your destination.
Buried in the side of a large sand dune, is the entrance to the fabled lost tomb of pharaoh Erick.
The huge stone door that had been blocking it was removed the previous day, leaving now an ominous looking hole, leading into darkness.

> light lamp
If flames into life.

> north
You move north.
The walls are decorated with faded pictures of wild flowers. The low ceiling forces you to crouch over, an uncomfortable position to hold for long, and forms a narrow passage that gently slopes downward.

> x walls
The pictures of flowers must of been a dazzling sight of colour, before they faded into pale pastels. You notice a crack in the east wall.

> put dynamite in crack in the wall
You put the stick of dynamite inside the crack in the wall.

> light dynamite
You light it. The fuse crackles like a sparkler, and remember, it's a very short fuse.

> south
You move south.

> east
You move east.
Dust hangs still in the stuffy air. At the far end of the room is an altar in pristine condition. Nothing is unusual about the floor or walls, as they are all perfectly unblemished, but the ceiling is another matter. A long narrow hole is cut into it, running vertically towards the altar.

> x altar
A perfect cuboid of flawless marble. Astronomical symbols are carved into its surface. A moon orb is on the altar.

> put water bottle on altar
The altar drops ever so slightly and you hear a click, but is that a good thing?

> get moon orb
Slowly, you carefully take the orb....Nothing happens and you take a sigh of relief.

> west
You move west.

As you enter, heavy stone doors in front and behind you drop down, sealing you in. , Standing in the middle of the room is a magnificently decorated sarcophagus. The walls are decorated with brightly coloured effigies of animals and several holes in the ceiling spiral outwards from a central point.
Sand begins to filter through holes in the ceiling.

> x walls
Painted upon the walls in the most vibrant of colours are three effigies of animals. A crocodile, an eagle, and a scorpion.

> x eagle
Its wings are spread wide. Its eyes, shallow holes.

> x sarcophagus
It is covered in gold leaf and hieroglyphics. The sarcophagus is closed.

> ask rupert to open sarcophagus
"Ah need my help to open this thingy-ma-jig eh? Well I'm more than welcome to oblige dear boy!"

> open sarcophagus
Together, you and Rupert manage to remove the lid, sending it crashing to the floor.

> x sarcophagus
It is covered in gold leaf and hieroglyphics. The sarcophagus is open. The mummy is inside the sarcophagus.

> x mummy
Wrapped in old, dusty bandages, it rests in an eternal sleep. Placed in its eyes are sparkling emeralds.

> get emeralds
You manage to dig them out of the eye sockets with your fingers. The sand is up to your knees.

> put emeralds in eagle's eyes
They click into place. As you do, the sand ceases to fall and the heavy stone doors slowly open.

"Whew!, that was a close one." Says Rupert, wiping sweat from his brow.

Another narrow passage, descending even further downward. The walls are covered in plaster and decorated with simple geometric shapes, repeated over and over again to form a pattern.

> north
You move north.
The room is dark and gloomy. Only the east and west walls have any sort of decoration upon them, a motif of dancing skeletons. The floor is covered with dried reeds, and to the north, an open doorway. A strange hole in the wall is beside it, low to the ground.

> search reeds
You rummage around in the reeds with your hands. Touching something cold, you grasp it firmly and whip it up. To your surprise it is a spear.

> south
You move south.
Another narrow passage, descending even further downward. The walls are covered in plaster and decorated with simple geometric shapes, repeated over and over again to form a pattern.

> x walls
The circle, square and triangle feature heavily in the pattern. Some damage has been made to the west wall, revealing bricks.

> break bricks with spear
Using the point of the spear, you chip away at the bricks, little by little. It takes you quite a while, but you manage to make a hole large enough for you to squeeze through.

> west
You move west.
The room is long and narrow, stretching far off northwards, with a dome shaped roof. At the far end, you can see a slender marble statue, carved into the shape of a crocodile. Upon the floor, decorated in the style of a large snake winding its way across the floor, are four rows of square wood panels, each one having a Roman numeral painted on it. It is impossible to reach the other end of the room without stepping on the panels.

> x panels
There are four rows, each containing five panels with Roman numerals painted on. Those numbers are, starting with the first row closest to the entrance:

VI III IV X XI

V II VIII IV V

VI I XX XIV II

X XVII V VII IV

All of them are painted black, except the 'X' in the first row, which is painted red.

> step on x
"I'll stay at this end of room, if it's all right with you!" Says Rupert, slapping you on the back.
You step onto the numeral. You are standing on the X numeral of the first row. You can move south to the entrance of the room.

> step on viii
You step onto the numeral. You are standing on the VIII numeral of the second row.

> step on xiv
You step onto the numeral XIV. You are standing on the XIV numeral of the third row. Rupert is having 'tiffin'

Rupert slurps some tea, eats the scones and burps.
"Oops, pardon me!" He says, brushing crumbs from his moustache.

> step on xvii
You step onto the numeral XVII. You are standing on the XVII numeral of the fourth row. Just to the north is the Crocodile statue. Rupert is having 'tiffin'

He packs it all back up and looks ready for more adventuring.

> north
You move north.
You are now beside the magnificent marble statue of the crocodile. It stands a full five feet and is very imposing. The mouth with all its teeth is slightly open, enough for you to reach in. Inside you see something shining.

> x mouth
Whatever is in there, is far at the back.

> x crocodile
It stands up upon its hind legs, the mouth slightly open.

> put spear in mouth
As you do so, the jaws slam shut. But as they do, they smash against each other and break into little pieces.

> put hand in mouth
You slowly reach in with your hand. As soon as it touches the shining item, the jaws of the statue slam shut on your hand. fortunately, as the teeth are broken, it causes you no harm and you take the object, discovering it to be a sun orb.

> south
You skillfully leap from one panel to the other until you reach the other end of the room. The room is long and narrow, stretching far off northwards, with a dome shaped roof. At the far end, you can see a slender marble statue, carved into the shape of a crocodile. Upon the floor, decorated in the style of a large snake winding its way across the floor, are four rows of square wood panels, each one having a Roman numeral painted on it. > north
There is no way through that door at the moment. Just as you are about to leave, Rupert nearly trips on something. Clearing away the reeds, he finds a brick poking up about an inch.
"By jove! What bad workmanship, having an uneven floor like that!!" He exclaims, then pushes it down, making it flush with the rest of the bricks.
Both entrances to the room suddenly close with stone doors, and the east and west walls begin to slowly move together.
"Oops!" Says Rupert.
The walls are 12 feet apart.

> ask rupert to put hand in hole
"Need my help again what! Looks like a good thing I came along then doesn't it!" He says, crouching down to the hole and putting his arm in, up to his shoulder.
"I can feel a something, yes, a wheel. I can turn it clockwise." He says.
As he does so, you notice the northern door inching open.

You wait. Time passes…

The walls are 8 feet apart.

> wait
You wait. Time passes…
The northern door is about half a foot open.

> wait

The walls are 6 feet apart.

> block walls with spear
You wedge the spear between the walls, stopping them in their tracks. The spear seems to be holding (for now).

> wait
You wait. Time passes…

> wait
You wait. Time passes…
The spear begins to bend.
The northern door is about a foot open.

You wait. Time passes…
The spear is buckling.

The spear snaps like a dead twig.

> wait

> wait

The walls are 4 feet apart.
The northern door is open enough for you to escape!

> north
You and Rupert quickly dash for the door and squeeze under, moments before the walls crunch together.
"I'll tell you one thing dear boy!, this expedition is turning out to be more fun than I thought!" Says Rupert, catching his breath.
A spectacular sarcophagus, made from solid gold and decorated in the highest quality, takes centre stage in a large chamber, the walls of which are stunningly painted and carved. Mounted in an arch in one of the walls, is a large and impressive statue of a jackal.
Three gold rimmed archways lead off in three directions, northwest, north and northeast.

> x jackal
It is a stone carving covered in gold leaf. It sits in an arch in the wall, overlooking the sarcophagus with its mouth open, as if it was growling.

> x mouth
Upon closer inspection, you notice a small hole.

> put cork in mouth
You poke it in with your thumb. It makes a tight fit.

> ask rupert to open sarcophagus
"Another one eh? Very well."

> open sarcophagus
You both manage to push the heavy lid onto the floor.

> x sarcophagus
It is made of solid gold and takes pride of place in the middle of the room. immaculately carved into its surface are hundreds of hieroglyphics. The sarcophagus is open. The mummy and a sapphire are inside the sarcophagus.

> get sapphire
You take a sapphire from the sarcophagus.

You move northeast.
The ceiling is low, the air, chilled with moisture. The large, rough bricks of the walls are cold and wet to the touch, due to condensation. Moss grows rampantly upon the mortar between them. A stone well with a wooden frame has been built in the middle.

> x frame
A simple wooden frame supporting a beam of wood with a handle attached over the well.

> tie rope to beam
After firmly securing the rope, it dangles down into the darkness of the well.

> down
"If its all the same to you dear boy, I'll stay up here." Says Rupert.

As you climb down into the darkness, the eerie silence and chilled air makes you shiver. You're standing up to your knees in stagnant water. The sides of the well are smooth and slippery, making them impossible to climb. Also here is the death mask.

> get death mask
You pick up the death mask.

> put death mask in rucksack
You put the death mask inside your rucksack.

> tie rucksack to rope
Your rucksack is now securely tied to the end of the rope.

> ask rupert to turn handle
"Righty ho!" Shouts Rupert.
He winds the rope up, detaches the rucksack, then winds it back down again.

The walls are made of a rough cut black rock, which makes the room darker then the others. Standing in each corner is a pillar, each painted a different colour, red, green, yellow and blue. A large symmetrical design of abstract shapes has been carved into the floor, with an inscription drawn in the centre circle. Also here is the cat, the vulture, the snake and the dung beetle.

> get cat
You pick up the cat.

You pick up the dung beetle.

> x inscription
Something has been carved into the stone floor, but has faded over time, making it impossible to read.

> open notebook
You open the notebook. Some paper is inside the notebook.

> get paper
You take some paper from the notebook.

> put paper on inscription
You put the paper onto the inscription.

> rub paper with pencil
By rubbing all over the paper, you make a relief of the inscription.

> x relief
It shows the cat by water, the snake chasing the sun, the vulture flying above fire, and the dung beetle hiding in grass.

> put cat on blue pillar
You put the cat onto the blue pillar.

> put snake on yellow pillar
You put the snake onto the yellow pillar.

> put vulture on red pillar
You put the vulture onto the red pillar.

The walls are bare and polished smooth, except for the north wall, upon which is a very strange design.

> x wall
The writing on the wall is as clear as crystal. It read:
At the start of the festive night, my legs are strong and right.
By the middle, when a lot of rejoicing has been made, their strength begins to fade.
And at the end when all is said and sung and done, I have to crawl upon the floor, homeward bound forever more.
What strange ailment has effected me so?
Say it loud if you know.

> drunk
As you speak the answer, it echoes out all around the room. There is a moment of silence...... then the roof begins to creak and crack. Slowly, it lowers down upon chains of iron, bringing sand blown in by the wind with it. When it finally stops, it has formed a ramp, leading up and out of this damned forsaken place.

> up
You and Rupert climb the ramp, leaving the gloom and dark of the tomb behind.
"Well, that was a most interesting diversion what!" says Rupert, while cleaning his monocle.
"Yes, most rewarding, we have discovered the lost tomb of the great Pharaoh, Erick" He continues, "And although it may not of been stacked to the rafters with gold and jewels, this mask thingy must be worth a bob or two." He says, while he finishes dusting himself down. His alarm clock then suddenly rings. "Ye Gods!" He exclaims, looking at the time. "We'll need to get a move on dear boy! It's nearly supper time!"
And with that, you and Rupert start the trek back to camp.
You scored 175 out of the maximum 175!
That is 100% of the game!
Well done - you scored maximum points!
